218th General Assembly Recollections from Minister Commissioner Rev. Jim MillerFrom Minister Commissioner Jim Miller (pastor, Pemberville) to the 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) Thursday, June 26, 2008 San Jose, California I write this sitting in the plenary session of the GA, next to my fellow commissioners Rev. David Koch, Elder Jodi Schmidt, Elder Norma Wible, and YAD Liz Miller. Serving as a GA commissioner is a little like flying an airplane.... long periods of boredom punctuated by short times of terror. It is amazing to me how the church works. Previous commissioners have told of sensing the Holy Spirit at work, and I truly think this is true. Our moderator offers an example. I did not vote for him (he was my second choice). However, he is clearly the man for this job. He is young, energetic, charismatic, and has a wonderful sense of humor. He is exactly what we need for this assembly and as the face of our church for the coming two years. Also, I have spoken on the floor twice, a thoroughly terrifying experience. I have been greatly encouraged about the life of our church as a result of this experience. We are divided on many issues, it is true, and many of these disagreements are serious. And yet, I truly believe that two things hold us together and give me hope. One, we still hold to a confessional and reformed understanding of the Christian Faith, as expressed in the ancient creeds of the church; Jesus is still confessed as Savior and Lord. (Though here in California, the land of fruits and nuts, some of the ways He is confessed are, well, you see what I mean). Second, the Holy Spirit abides with us still. Thanks to my fellow members of the Maumee Valley Presbytery for sending me to this 218th General Assembly of the PC (USA). |
