218th General Assembly Recollections from Young Adult Advisory Delegate Elizabeth MillerAs a Youth Advisory Delegate at the 218th General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, I have spent the past few days soaking in the opinions of my fellow delegates and commissioners, becoming friends with my brothers and sisters in Christ, worshiping Jesus Christ the Lord our God, and learning to hate Robert’s Rules of Order. (Just kidding on that last one.) (Kind of.) I was a member of the Polity Committee, which dealt with several non earth-shattering matters, such as whether to replace the word “sympathy” with the word “empathy” in a section of the Book of Order (in case you were wondering, we went with “compassion”), and several highly important, highly polarized issues, such as whether or not membership vows should include a profession of faith in Jesus Christ, the matter of equal rights for the families of same-sex partners, and finally, what is possibly one of the most controversial issues on the docket, the question of whether or not the definition of marriage should be changed from “between a man and a woman” to “between two people.” I learned many things while serving on the Polity Committee, and spent most of my time listening to the opinions of others, although I did make my opinion known a few times when I felt very strongly on an issue. I am so glad that ours is a denomination that allows the youth to have a voice when it comes to such important matters of the church. I am having a wonderful time here in San Jose, California, and I cannot wait to see how the rest of the assembly comes out. God Bless! Liz Miller Youth Advisory Delegate Maumee Valley Presbytery |
