Interim General Presbyter Job Description

Title:    Interim General Presbyter

Purpose:    To provide leadership and direction for Maumee Valley Presbytery’s mission and ministry during the transition.

Hours:    Full Time (40-50 hours per week)

Accountability:    The Interim General Presbyter shall be Head of Staff and will be accountable to the Presbytery through the Personnel Committee , who shall conduct regular reviews and evaluations.  The Personnel Committee shall report to Council and Council shall report to the Presbytery.

Relationships:    The Interim General Presbyter will work closely with other Presbytery staff (both ordained and lay), committee moderators and other key leaders in the Presbytery.  The Interim General Presbyter will also participate in the work of the Synod of the Covenant and the General Assembly.

Functions and Expectations:

1.      Vision:  The Interim General Presbyter shall challenge and lead Maumee Valley Presbytery. The Interim General Presbyter shall coordinate and assist the Presbytery in a self study.  The Interim General Presbyter assists committees in identifying actions which allow the Presbytery to achieve its future goals. 

2.      Oversight of Presbytery Structure:  The Interim General Presbyter assists committees and    the Presbytery as a whole in focusing upon the essential elements of the Presbytery’s mission and ministry.  The Interim General Presbyter meets regularly with the Committee on Ministry and the Committee on Preparation for Ministry to provide guidance, information and support.

3.      Pastoral Care and Crisis Intervention:  The Interim General Presbyter provides for the pastoral care of the clergy of Maumee Valley Presbytery and their families, especially in times of special need.

4.      Self –care:  The Interim General Presbyter sets an example for other clergy and lay leaders in the Presbytery by taking appropriate steps to maintain his/her spiritual, mental, physical, and emotional health.  Such steps shall include (but are not limited to) working reasonable hours, observing a personal “Sabbath” day each week, making full use of all vacation provided, and making full use of all continuing education leave provided.

5.      Support of Local Churches:  The Interim General Presbyter works cooperatively with the committees of Presbytery to support and encourage congregational development.  The Interim General Presbyter provides support and encouragement to committees who are helping congregations through times of transition and change.  The Interim  General Presbyter works with the Committee on Ministry to recruit, train, and support pastors and commissioned lay preachers for Maumee Valley Presbytery.  As time allows, the Interim General Presbyter stays in touch with the churches and pastors of the Presbytery through group meetings, telephone calls, preaching opportunities, and other means.

6.      Representation:  The Interim General Presbyter takes part in meetings of the General Assembly and the Synod of the Covenant.  The Interim General Presbyter may also participate in other national, regional, or local gatherings related to the Presbyterian Church, U.S.A. and its ecumenical partners.

7.      Evaluation:  The Interim General Presbyter provides information and insight to Council as the committee reviews and evaluates the mission and ministry of Maumee Valley Presbytery.

8.      Staff Support:   In addition to his/her responsibilities as Head of Staff, the Interim General Presbyter provides opportunities for spiritual nurture for the staff.

Skills and Abilities Needed

The job of Interim General Presbyter is best suited for a person who possesses spiritual maturity, a Christian character, a solid understanding of the Presbyterian Church (USA), and a sense of humor.  The job of Interim General Presbyter requires excellent communication skills, good organizational skills, computer literacy, and excellent team-building skills.  The Interim General Presbyter should have interim presbyter  training , or able to demonstrate interim capabilities in previous work.

The Interim General Presbyter must be able to establish priorities and find a way to live a balanced life in the midst of many competing interests and demands.

The Interim General Presbyter must be able to lead, to delegate leadership to others, and to work with others as part of a leadership team.

The Interim General Presbyter must have the ability to help the Presbytery identify areas of strength and opportunities for growth.   Must be able to say both “yes” and “no” in a tactful manner and live with the consequences of either decision.

The Interim General Presbyter must be a person who can honor the need for confidentiality and can deal appropriately with confidential information.

The Interim General Presbyter must be both firm and flexible, a person of solid convictions who is nevertheless respectful of others.
